The Job: Volume One (The Job #1) Page 7

“I’m not doing that anymore. It was a mistake on my part and I’ve stopped.” I admit to him, hoping that would deter him from whatever kind of arrangement he is trying to force me into.

“You can’t quit being a whore. It doesn’t work like that.” He counters with a snide attitude.

“Yes, you can. And I did. After you pulled a gun on me, I stopped. You don’t know anything about me.” I am getting more bold with my words and I am hoping he doesn’t punish me for it. He holds so much over my head right now and I don’t know what to do.

“I have to give that to you. I don’t know much about you. But, I am going to learn as much as I can while you are working for me. You are going to be my new personal assistant and you are going to love every second of it. I promise you, Madeline… I’m not a bad guy.” I want to laugh in his face. Not a bad guy? Unbelievable. Yeah, he is just a regular freaking boy scout!

“Yeah, I am sure you are a great guy. An amazing catch for some woman. But, I’m just not interested.” I watch him closely as he rubs his temples and lets out a deep breath. His voice is extremely quiet when he starts to speak again.

“You are going to take this job, and you are going to like it. You are going to be my personal assistant. I will not take no for an answer. If you decline, you can deal with the consequences on your own. I have Police Chief Martin’s phone number on speed dial and thanks to your resume, I have your address. You’d be in handcuffs by the end of today. Think about that. Let it simmer. I wonder what your children would think of you, Madeline?”

“I’ll do it.” I break down the minute my children are brought into this. He has won because, once again, I have found myself in a position of desperation. I can’t let him go to the police. I can’t be away from my children. He has won again and I have the feeling that he is the kind of man who is going to win over and over again.

Maybe if I just keep to myself, and do my job it won’t be so bad?

Damn it! One bad choice is going to impact me for the rest of my life. I shouldn’t have been so damn stupid to think some college girl on the internet was a fantastic role model for making money. I should have known better than to think I could make a little bit of quick money without it impacting me for the rest of my life.

“I’m so glad to have you as my new personal assistant, Madeline. You’ll start on Wednesday. Wear a skirt, no panties… and those heels. I like those heels.” No longer are they my favorite pair. Ugh.

“Wednesday.” I reply as I stand from the chair and turn for the door.

“I’m excited for our new chapter together, Madeline. I think this will be the start of a beautiful relationship. Don’t you?” He laughs as I exit the office and make a bee line for the front door. Denise waves and I briefly acknowledge her farewell.

Safely inside my car, locking the doors, I bow my head and rest it on the steering wheel wondering what the hell I just got myself into. How I am going to explain any of this to Brian?

There is absolutely no way I can tell him.

But if he finds out… will he ever forgive me?
